Actua’s IDEAS Summit 2023
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in STEM
October 3-5, 2023 • Online across Canada

Actua’s 3rd annual IDEAS Summit: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in STEM, held in October 2023, brought together educators across Canada. Thank you to all of our barrier breaking speakers, and to all educators who joined us nationwide!

The IDEAS Summit created an empowering space for educators - nationwide - to connect, get inspired and learn from diverse voices, perspectives and expertise in STEM fields and education.

Together, we tackled questions including:

  • how can we build more inclusive STEM education opportunities for all youth;

  • how can we adapt equity, diversity and inclusion practices for different teaching contexts; and

  • what does inclusion mean to you?

To find out more about the learnings shared at the IDEAS Summit, or to see highlights from the event, please follow #IDEASxActua online, check out these key takeaways from the Summit on Actua’s website, or contact our team at education@actua.ca.

What did participants think of IDEAS?

It’s rare to be exposed to indigenous educators so it was an honour to be in a room with indigenous panelists who provided great insight on how to teach about indigenous ways of knowing as a non-indigenous educator. It was a great virtual Summit where I learned from outstanding educators, I am inspired and ready to be part of the change for more equitable and inclusive STEM education in Canada!”
— Laura Roa, pre-service educator, 2021
“The whole Actua team is amazing! I can’t begin to put into words to describe my level of awe and gratitude each time I attend an Actua conference. I sincerely and deeply appreciate the purebred Canadian (not American) expertise, the development of local, provincial and federal networks, and introductions to vetted innovations that are truly transformative!”
— Anonymous K-12 teacher, 2021
“This was my first summit and I was impressed with it on a whole right down to the platform that was so easy to use and access sessions, info., and the contest was great!!”
— K-12 administrator, coach or board/district specialist, 2022
“I SO appreciate the wide variety of speakers you had and the positive attitudes they brought to their talks…”
— Georgia Trifon, Outreach Coordinator, 2023
“As a teacher candidate this was an amazing opportunity to experience. I will carry the information and innovative practices with me to my future classes in hopes to create more equity and diversity in STEM.”
— Meghan Hanna, Teacher Candidate, 2023
“What a great experience! It was wonderful to hear how other areas in Canada are incorporating indigenous knowing into their curriculum and how we can diversify our teaching to be more welcoming to all students. Thank you!”
