Opening Remarks & Day 1 Keynote

Keynote

Kyne is a world-class drag queen, YouTuber, and mathematics communicator known for her educational math videos on TikTok and other platforms, attracting an audience of over one million followers. She was born in Manila and grew up in Kitchener, Ontario, graduating high school with the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship to study at the University of Waterloo, where Kyne graduated with a Bachelor of Mathematics with a major in Mathematical Finance. Kyne is passionate about diversity and inclusion in math, and wants to reduce the amount of youth who leave schooling with a heavy dislike for math. Join us as Kyne discusses how to bring concepts of diversity into the math classroom, and how to bring STEM education to the queer community and queerness to STEM.

Join Actua’s Education Team as we share strategies and examples on how to integrate Artificial Intelligence into Grade 9-12 classrooms to teach youth about the impact of bias and inequalities.

Seminar: Equity and Allyship in my Classroom

Educators have a crucial role to play in teaching youth how to be allies for diverse groups. Actua wants to showcase how other educators in Canada support diverse identities and demonstrate allyship in their own classroom. Join this session to learn about mindsets and practices that can help you on your journey towards becoming a more equitable educator.

Workshop Breakout 1: Inclusive Spaces through Making with UofT

Join the University of Toronto’s Engineering Outreach Office to learn how to promote inclusion in science and engineering education through the “maker movement,” to help youth see themselves in the curriculum. This session will explore how maker space education functions as a part of STEAM education and how it can be used to bridge gaps associated with inequity and a lack of opportunity. This session will focus on makerspace creation in both institutions and at home, as well as what virtual instruction in these spaces might look like.

Workshop Breakout 2: The Story for FuturePLAY: Making for Equity and Engagement

How can Making promote equity and excitement in STEM? Join FuturePLAY to learn how to leverage emerging online technology to help youth create and see themselves in this field. See how we can use Making to build inclusive spaces in the classroom and online.

How might STEAM – fusing arts into science education – create more inclusive paths to STEM futures? How does land-based learning inspire students to connect Indigenous knowledge to Western STEM, and how is this being realized in remote and Northern communities? Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux will tackle these questions and more as she shares her experience as an Indigenous educator and Lakehead University’s first Indigenous Chair for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Be prepared to explore how to break down barriers in STEM for students, and provide diverse entry points for all learners that build on meaningful and holistic connections.

Panel: Enriching K-12 STEM with Indigenous Ways of Knowing

Let’s continue this crucial conversation by discussing decolonization and learning more about Indigenous perspectives, knowledge and realities in STEM. Learn from the panel as they share ideas on how we can foster spaces that are ethical and respectful of Indigenous culture and Traditional Ways of Knowing both in and outside of STEM classrooms.

Workshop: Making STEM Culturally Relevant – InSTEM Education

Actua’s Outreach Team will take you through strategies and examples to help you integrate Indigenous Ways of Knowing into your STEM classes. This workshop will highlight activities that have been used in K-12 educational programming in a variety of settings.

Join others to discuss topics ranging from PD, teaching during a pandemic, incorporating Indigenous Realities and Knowledge in your classroom, strategies/resources for equity, diversity and inclusion, and more.

Workshop: Reimagining Inclusive Online Learning with Live It

Learn how Live It is leveraging technology to spark imagination and invite youth into STEM from a variety of entry points. You’ll also learn how to bring environmental education into diverse contexts and how land-based Knowledge can be the foundation for creating inclusive learning environments.
